About Worship Today

  • This period in the Church year is known as “The Season after Pentecost” or “Ordinary Time.” The term “ordinary” refers to how the New Testament passages are generally read in order or in sequence, as opposed to being arranged by specific theme as in other seasons. During this season the Gospel passages focus on Jesus’ ministry, how he is revealed to the world as the Christ, and what he teaches to his followers. In Year A (the first in a three-year cycle: A, B & C) most of the Gospel passages are from the Gospel according to Matthew. When Track 1 is used, the Old Testament Lesson is read in thematic sequence throughout the summer, in Year A we will read from the Pentateuch (first five books of the Bible). The New Testament Lesson is independent of these readings and is almost always taken from one of the Letters in the New Testament that reflects the common life and mission of the first Christian community.
  • The Holy Eucharist, the principal act of Christian worship on the Lord's Day and other major Feasts, and Daily Morning and Evening Prayer, as set forth in the Book of Common Prayer, 1979, are the regular services appointed for public worship in the Episcopal Church. At Christ Church we celebrate the Holy Eucharist every Sunday, and also on Holy Days and other occasions.
  • Today’s liturgy is from the red Book of Common Prayer 1979. All hymns are taken from the blue Hymnal 1982 or other authorized hymnals for use in the Episcopal Church. All hymns are reprinted with permission under OneLicense.net A713125.
  • Today's Lessons can be found at the Lectionary Page (Track 1)

Dr. J's Notes:

  • Harold Friedell was a distinguished American organist, composer, conductor, and educator. He taught at both The Juilliard School and Union Theological Seminary, composed numerous choral anthems and works for solo organ, and was a prominent leader in the American Guild of Organists. His music remains firmly rooted in the Anglican choral tradition, marked by expressive text setting and a rich harmonic language. In 1946, Friedell was appointed Organist and Master of the Choir at St. Bartholomew’s Church on Park Avenue, a position he held for the remainder of his career. His years at St. Bartholomew’s placed him at the center of one of the country’s most distinguished church music programs. Friedell died suddenly of a heart attack on February 17, 1958, while walking to the train station in Hastings-on-Hudson following a heavy snowstorm the previous evening. His funeral was held at St. Bartholomew’s Church on February 20, and he was buried in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Tarrytown.

We Need Your Help!

We Need Your Help!

ast year, our raffle generated more profit than the admission fees from the cars and the general public guests put together.  And it came from volunteers who went out to their local pizza shop; diner; nail salon; service station; restaurant and bar; grocery store; art studio; gym;  bagel shop. In increments of $25; $30; $50 - and sometimes more than $100, but not always - these efforts gave us the impetus to be there for those thousands of neighbors who needed us.

We're a bit behind in this part of our efforts  - WE NEED YOUR HELP to give one more effort to turn in a gift certficate; a gift card; a financial donation. But particularly a retail certificate that we can add to the raffle. Would you stop in at those places that YOU know ? Stop in some of those restaurants on City Island or Main Street/New Rochelle has many retail opportunities; Mt. Vernon is virtually unvisited; so many opportunities! And finally - if you can't solicit donations or don't feel you're able to do so - would you contribute some gift cards personally? Visa/MC, AMEX, Amazon - etc - those make great raffle items.

Please speak to Carla Carroll or Carol Ipsen if you have any questions or if your have procurred any gift cards or gifts!
