About Worship Today

  • Today is the Twenty-fourth Sunday after Pentecost, Proper 27. In today’s readings, Joshua calls the people to serve the Lord, Paul offers hope in the resurrection, and Jesus tells the parable of the wise and foolish bridesmaids, urging his followers to keep awake and be ready.
  • This period in the Church year is known as “The Season after Pentecost” or “Ordinary Time.” During this season, the Gospel passages focus on Jesus’ ministry, how he is revealed to the world as the Christ, and what he teaches his followers. In Year A, most of the Gospel passages are from the Gospel according to Matthew.
  • The Holy Eucharist, the principal act of Christian worship on the Lord’s Day and other major feasts, and Daily Morning and Evening Prayer, as set forth in the Book of Common Prayer, 1979, are the regular services appointed for public worship in the Episcopal Church. At Christ Church we celebrate the Holy Eucharist every Sunday, and also on Holy Days and other occasions.
  • Today’s liturgy is from the red Book of Common Prayer 1979. All hymns are taken from the blue Hymnal 1982 or other authorized hymnals for use in the Episcopal Church. All hymns are reprinted with permission under OneLicense.net A713125.
  • Today’s Lessons can be found at the Lectionary Page (Track 1).

Dr. J’s Notes

Aaron Copland (1900–1990) was one of the most influential figures in American music, distinguished as a composer, conductor, pianist, teacher, and passionate advocate for American composers. Widely regarded by his colleagues and critics as the “Dean of American Composers,” Copland played a central role in establishing a distinctly American musical identity. His characteristic use of spacious harmonies and open textures evokes the vast American landscape and the pioneering spirit of the nation.

During the 1930s and 1940s, he developed an accessible musical language that he called his “vernacular” style, drawing inspiration from American folk traditions and the music of everyday life. Among his most celebrated works are the ballets Appalachian Spring, Billy the Kid, and Rodeo, along with the iconic Fanfare for the Common Man and his monumental Third Symphony.

Although his compositions range from intimate chamber works to large-scale orchestral masterpieces, it is his unmistakably American sound that has secured his enduring place in musical history. Few composers have so profoundly shaped the musical identity of their country, and Copland’s influence continues to be felt throughout American concert music today.
