About Worship Today

  • Today we celebrate All Saints’ Day, giving thanks for the saints who have gone before us and for the fellowship we share with them in the Body of Christ. In today’s Gospel, Jesus teaches the Beatitudes, blessing those who seek mercy, righteousness, and peace.
  • The Holy Eucharist, the principal act of Christian worship on the Lord’s Day and other major feasts, and Daily Morning and Evening Prayer, as set forth in the Book of Common Prayer, 1979, are the regular services appointed for public worship in the Episcopal Church. At Christ Church we celebrate the Holy Eucharist every Sunday, and also on Holy Days and other occasions.
  • Today’s liturgy is from the red Book of Common Prayer 1979. All hymns are taken from the blue Hymnal 1982 or other authorized hymnals for use in the Episcopal Church. All hymns are reprinted with permission under OneLicense.net A713125.
  • Today's Lessons can be found at the Lectionary Page (Track 1)

Dr. J’s Notes

Sir Ernest Bullock was a distinguished English organist, composer, and educator who played a significant role in British church music during the twentieth century. Born in Wigan, England, he served as Organist of Exeter Cathedral before becoming Organist and Master of the Choristers at Westminster Abbey in 1928, where he helped direct the music for the coronation of King George VI in 1937. He subsequently held prominent academic appointments in Glasgow and served as Director of the Royal College of Music in London.

Knighted in 1951, Bullock is remembered particularly for his contributions to the Anglican choral tradition. His beloved anthem “Give Us the Wings of Faith,” published in 1925, sets a hymn by Isaac Watts (1674–1748) contemplating the glory of the saints and their eternal rest in Christ. Especially appropriate for All Saints’ Day, the music begins with gentle, flowing choral lines, builds to a radiant central climax, and gradually returns to a serene conclusion, beautifully reflecting the text’s vision of heavenly peace and the promise of everlasting life.
