About Worship Today
Saint Matthew is remembered as being one of the Twelve called by Jesus, as well as the author of the Gospel according to Matthew. Post-biblical traditions claim that Saint Matthew travelled as a missionary to Ethiopia and Persia. His bones were supposedly brought from Ethiopia to Salerno, and the Cathedral of Salerno was built over his tomb there. That Cathedral was dedicated on September 21, 1084. Saint Matthew’s Gospel provides of a wealth of material that is not found in the other Gospels, such as Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount (including the Beatitudes), the Parable of the Last Judgement (“Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these, you did it to me.”), the story of Magi following the Star, and much more. We are told by Christ in Saint Matthew’s Gospel to “be perfect as your Father in heaven is perfect”.
The Holy Eucharist, the principal act of Christian worship on the Lord's Day and other major Feasts, and Daily Morning and Evening Prayer, as set forth in the Book of Common Prayer, 1979, are the regular services appointed for public worship in the Episcopal Church. At Christ Church we celebrate the Holy Eucharist every Sunday, and also on Holy Days and other occasions.
Today’s liturgy is from the red Book of Common Prayer 1979. All hymns are taken from the blue Hymnal 1982 or other authorized hymnals for use in the Episcopal Church. All hymns are reprinted with permission under OneLicense.net A713125.
