Today is All Saints’ Sunday, the first Sunday after All Saints’ Day, November 1. In Eastern Churches as early as the fourth century a day was set aside to celebrate and give thanks for the lives of Christian Martyrs. The celebration was eventually expanded to include all the saints – even those that were not martyrs. That feast was celebrated on a variety of dates (depending on the local custom), and in the East it is still celebrated in the late spring. In Western Churches, All Saints’ Day has been celebrated on November 1 for over one thousand years. It is thought that Irish churches celebrated the feast on November 1, and the celebration on that date gradually spread south until it was made “official” by the church in Rome when a chapel dedicated to All Saints was consecrated on November 1. We give thanks for the lives of all the saints who have come before us, and we celebrate the saints in our midst.
