Shrove Tuesday is the day preceding Ash Wednesday (the first day of Lent), which is celebrated by consuming pancakes. The tradition of eating pancakes likely is based on a tradition of abstaining from fat/oil and eggs during Lent; thus the eggs and fat were combined with flour into pancake and consumed the night before Lent began. The word “shrove” is a form of the English word shrive, which means to obtain absolution for one’s sins. It was (and still is) customary to begin Lent by making a Sacramental Confession. Father Matt is available, by appointment, for Confession; please contact the Parish Office.
